When to spay a stray cat with swollen nipples and no appetite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

There is a stray young female cat in my neighbourhood and I have repeatedly tried to trap and neuter her unsuccessfully. She gave birth to a stillborn kitten 10 days ago. She has become friendly since, so I could easily trap her, but I worry she may be nursing more kittens. She hangs around the feeding area for quite a while (doesn't just eat and run back to her babies). Her nipples are swollen, but with no signs of suckling and the fur in that area isn't wet. Plus she has lost her appetite.

Talk to the veterinarian you would take her to for spay. Ask how long she would need to be there before she could be released back to any possible kittens. They may be able to guide you best about how soon to trap her. But if she isn't eating well or acts sick it could be possible she has retained, dead kittens still in her in which case the sooner the better for her to get surgery. If she is hanging around a lot and not eating well, I would err on the side of taking her in as soon as possible in case she didn't deliver all kittens. Good luck.
