My dog was near an armadillo. Can she get leprosy from the encounter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 8 years and 4 months old | 40 lbs

Last night/early morning my dog had to go out (3:30am). My dog chased after an armadillo and cornered it. I screamed for her to come in and she stopped. They were both very close to one an other and my daughter ran over and grabbed my dog! Is there a chance that my dog can contract leprocy from that? She is up to date on shots.

If Honey never had actual contact with the armadillo the likelihood of any disease transmission is very low. I recommend contacting your local health department as they would be the best source for your area in terms of specific diseases and how frequent those diseases are. They may also have local guidelines for handling any incidental contact. If so they could work with you and your veterinarian on any necessary treatments.
