My dog has flaky ear skin. Why isn't Malaseb shampoo helping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 lbs

We rescued a dog last Monday (a Yorkie mix) from out next door neighbor. He's about a year old, and will be neutered this week. However, we've noticed in the past month or so, he's had flakey skin in his outer ear (the side without hair, leading into the ear canal.) What could this be? And I have bathed him 3 times since we got him, using Malesab dog shampoo on him, but it's not taking away the flakey skin in his ears.

This could indicate an infection of both bacteria as well as yeast. While Malaseb usually works on the skin it may be your dog has an infection deeper in the ear causing this as well as it might be resistant to the medications in Malaseb. I recommend having your veterinarian examined Ollie's ears as well as inside his ears at the time of his appointment to make sure he doesn't need stronger medication.
