Dog's collar caused neck wounds. What's the best home care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 30 lbs

Coal has wounds on his neck from his invisible fence collar. It was not intentionally this tight, but I had made it more snug along with his regular collar due to him pawing both off. I noticed it yesterday morning and shaved the area, and since then I have been washing with antibacterial soap and putting betadine on it 3x's a day. Will antibacterial soap wash and betadine be enough to heal this? Can I put Neosporin on it as well? First picture is today, second picture is yesterday.

That regimen maybe enough for this to heal. However if the redness does not go away or it starts to have an older or discharge then Coal needs to be seen by a veterinarian. Triple anabiotic ointment is unlikely to cause any harm. However if it is put on too thick can cause irritation. If Coal acts uncomfortable, has increasing redness, or develops a discharge then he needs to be seen by his veterinarian.
