Why is my older dog scared of our new puppy after a shot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

Lulu, our oldest dog, who is very calm and sweet, just got a parvo shot. we brought home a puppy 2 days ago and she will have nothing to do with it. She seems scared of it. Is this because she isn't feeling good? What's a good way to introduce them so they get along? And could she maybe be afraid of passing parvo on to the puppy and maybe that's why she flees anytime the puppy comes near her?

Lulu would not be aware of any contagious disease risks and many older dogs are unwilling and unsure of socializing with active, energetic puppies and take to time, up to a month, to fully adjust. Be sure to make time with Lulu on her own as you did before the puppy and try to introduce them after active play session when the puppy is more tired. Keep the puppy away from Lulus bed, toys and food bowls and keep him in separate room unless directly supervised to prevent friction and conflict
