What's the best and safest coccidia treatment for my young kittens?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 2 days old | 1.5 lbs

We have two kittens that are about 5 to 6 weeks old. They have coccidia according to our vet. He hesitated to prescribe Albon because of how young they are. I decided to do some research on side affects and am finding most people say that ponazuril is a much better and safer treatment, but these are not Vets making the statements. I need to know the best treatment for my kittens!

Ponazuril, while not specifically approved for dogs/cats, has been used safely for many cases of coccidia. Often the treatment chosen is based on the veterinarian's training, experience and drugs available. You can discuss using Ponazuril with your veterinarian and if he/she would be comfortable prescribing it.
