My dog just had puppies. Why won't she go potty outside after birth?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 years old | 14 lbs

My dog just gave birth to a litter about 8 hours ago (first birth). I have attempted to take her outside to go to the bathroom twice since she birthed the last pup and each time she cries and scratches at the door. I understand that she doesn't want to be away from her babies but at some point she is going to have to go to the bathroom, any suggestions? I do have some indoor doggie bathroom pads but I'm not sure that she would use them.

Poor girl! She is likely worried about leaving her pups. You can try the puppy pads but just make sure the puppies can't get tangled up in them. You can also line the area with towels. She will urinate when she is ready. If you still don't think she has urinated 24 hours after birth, I would contact your vet to ensure she doesn't have an infection. Also, make sure she is eating and drinking okay. After birth, Dams can do peculiar things simce labor can be stressful and they have a lot of hormones and they are trying to care for their puppies. I hope this helps! Congrats on the puppies!
