Dog in first heat: Is frequent peeing a UTI? Are homemade pads safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 51 lbs

is it bad for my dog's hygiene care if i used a home made underwear and pad (human) to catch her blood from her heat (first heat)? she bleeds heavily. she is peeing and pooing 4 times a day (lesser in quantity each time) compared to her before heat, 2 times a day. should i be worried about a urinary tract infection or is that normal?

Putting a pad can increase the risk of a urinary tract infection indeed so i would not recommend using one, especially if she is starting to urinate more frequently, this could potentially be a sign that a urinary infection is on it's way.
