My 11-year-old cat had a seizure and now freezes. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 years and 9 months old | 9.5 lbs

A few weeks ago, in the middle of playing, my 11 year old male cat tipped over on his side. He started breathing heavily, and his eyes were dilated. It took him a few minutes to shake off his confusion and return to normal. It appeared to be a seizure. A few times since then he will freeze in the middle of playing and sit there with his eyes dilated and frozen. But he has not fallen over again since the first time.

It is possible that Todd was having a seizure. Due to his age I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam. Older cats can develop disease that might predispose them to seizures like heart disease, hyperthyroidism, liver disease and neurologic disease. The vet will complete an exam and than most likely recommend some blood work to tell for underlying disease.
