Pug separation anxiety: Does it get better or should I get a trainer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 3 days old | 12 lbs

I think my 11 month old pug Daphne has separation anxiety. When we leave her alone with out 7 year old pug, Apollo, she fights with him. They get along well otherwise. Also, she cries and whines if I try to go upstairs without her (we have a baby gate). Please help! Will this get better with time? Should I seek out a trainer?

Unfortunately behavioral issues like anxiety usually get worse, not better, with time. It is good you are recognizing this issue early on. Getting a trainer involved now is a great start and you could even discuss possible medications to use in the short term with your veterinarian to help make things smoother as your work on training.
