My dog's painful peeing after surgery not improving with antibiotics.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed

My dog Diva was diagnosed with urinary infection after her pyometra surgery. She's taking antibiotics, but she doesn't seem to be improving. She pees on herself or tries to pee but can't. She also shows pain when trying to pee. Could it be something involved with kidney stones? We left on a family vacation for two days, and a close friend stayed to care for her. When we got back, she said Diva peed normally and was no problem. However, the same day she kept doing everything I mentioned above.

Poor Diva! Given the persistence of her symptoms I would recommend that Diva be rechecked by your veterinarian. They will likely recheck her urine and may recommend a urine culture if her infection has not improved. She may need different antibiotics or may have another problem exacerbating her symptoms

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If she is on an antibiotic, continue the full course. It may take several days to see a response / improvement on the antibiotic. If you think she is in any pain or there is blood in her urine, an anti-inflammatory medication such as Rimadyl or Metacam may help. I would call your veterinarian and discuss this further so that Jenna can get a prescription for either. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
