My dog's red shoulder bump with a scab popped. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 112 lbs

My dog had a red bump on her shoulder last night covered with what looked like a scab, when my dad went to look at it he sqeezed it slightly to see it better and it popped. It didn't seem to bother her in any way and she's doing fine now, but I just wanted to know what it was. Thanks in advance.

From your description it sounds like Cocoa has a ruptured cyst or possibly an abscess. Poodles and other dogs with "hair-like" coats are more prone to cyst formation. Most do not rupture, but occasionally they can become infected or inflammed and ruptured. If the area becomes red, irritated, continues to to have discharge or if Cocoa begins licking or scratching at the area, she should be seen by your veterinarian.
