What treats, fruits, or veggies are safe for my dog with IBD?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 months and 7 days old | 14.6 lbs

Piper has had digestive issues for most of her life but the worst since January. She has just recently finally been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, and is on prescription food and just started prednisone. I was just wondering if there are treats and bones for dogs with IBD or should we continue to avoid things other than her food? Are there fruits and vegetables that I could use as treats for her? She used to love bully sticks, but hasn't had anything like that since we started food.

I'm glad you guys are able to get Piper on appropriate treatment for her IBD. Sometimes fruits and vegetables can be OK for treats. It depends on how severe her case is and how well she responds to management. Usually we avoid anything but their prescription food and medication while we are getting there IBD under control. I would check with your veterinarian if it is OK to give something like baby carrots or green beans at this time. Also some prescription diet also come in treats so that may be an option for Piper as well. I would bully sticks and high protein treats as they can cause IBD flare ups like diarrhea.
