My adopted macaw is plucking feathers. How can I help before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | 1.95 lbs

I have just adopted a 5 year old female Blue and Gold macaw. The previous owners had her for two months and weren't great to the bird, it had no fresh air, no space and no where to fly. We picked her up 24 hours ago we could see she had damaged feathers, baldness under her wings where the wing meets the body. She's plucked some 20+ feathers today and the remaining look mangled/broken on her back and legs. I've booked a vet for next week but what can I do to reduce this behaviour in the meantime?

Get her on a balanced diet. Use a commercial pelleted diet such as Harrison's or LaFebers if you can get them. Offer fresh, chopped fruit and vegetables as well. A larger cage will prevent further wing and tail damage. Bathe her in the shower or mist her several times weekly to promote preening and healthy plumage/skin. Sanitize all cage furniture. Discard and replace anything that cannot be sanitized.
