How to treat a stray puppy's pus-filled wound at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

A stray puppy came into my yard. I can't afford to get him to a get right now and I can't find anyone who can give him a good home. I could afford to get him de-wormer and a 5-in-1 shot, but he has a wound on his back. A little bigger than a quarter and it has pus coming out of it. How can I clean it and help him?

Poor little Marlow! This wound could have been caused by another animal or an injury, and it does appear there is a fair amount of pus from your picture. He has to see a vet for it, as he will need antibiotics to treat the infection. You can clean it tonight with warm water and antiseptic soap, but he has to see a vet in the morning for it. If you cannot afford a vet for Marlow, then I recommend giving him to the SPCA in the morning. They can get him the veterinary treatment he needs, as well as his shots, flea medications, deworming treatments, heartworm treatment, and neutered. After that, they can find him a home. Good luck, I hope this helps!
