My dog's ear was up, now flopping after injury. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 6 months and 11 days old | 57 lbs

My dogs ears have been up for quite some time now, following an injury to his left ear (being bit by another dog). The cone helped that happen. This week, however, I have noticed that that same ear has been somewhat flopping. Should I be concerned?

Well Marshall is about the cutest thing I have seen in awhile! If the injury on his ear caused a lot of build up of scar tissue, this could weigh down the ear a bit. Or if there is a build of fluid you may see the same result. I would recommend to have your vet do an exam to ensure there is nothing that needs to be done to help intervene. Either way, he is truly adorable with those big brown eyes.

Puppy ears will flip and flop and may not always stand correctly. As long as he has no sign of pain or ear infection I wouldn't worry. If he is shaking his head, has any discharge from the ear or rubbing it a lot then I would get him evaluated for an ear infection. Sometimes they will flop over an ear if they have an infection.
