Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 4 years and 10 months old | 80 lbs
I own a 6 year old female GSD that over the last few weeks I have noticed that her stool is covered in a milky white mucus. Some stools are thickly covered at times. Her diet is raw & has not changed & she is eating/drinking normally. She has allergies that are being treated with Dexamethasone & Benadryl on opposite days. Her energy levels are lower than normal lately. Should i be concerned about this?

I would recommend GG have a check up. Mucus in the stool is a sign of colitis or GI upset so it would be a good idea to get her evaluated before she starts feeling worse. If anything has changed in the formulation of her raw diet she may have gastritis or bacterial overgrowth. Something is abnormal for her to have mucus in the stool for a couple of weeks. She may have parasites, or a bacterial overgrowth. There are many possibilities but I would be concerned. Good luck to GG.

Poor GG! This could be secondary to her raw diet. Raw diets can be prone to cause bacterial and parasitic infections which could cause the increase mucus production. Also since she is on dexamethasone, a steroid, her immune system may be a little lowered than normal making her more prone to these infections. Especially since she is lethargic, I would recommend to contact your vet for an exam, fecal and possible medication. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better really soon.
