My lovebird's tail bobs, clicks, breathes heavy. Is it a health issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 14 days old | 1.8 lbs

My lovebird was bobbing her tail slightly for about a minute. She didn't do it for awhile then later she was making a soft clicking sound without moving her beak. She seems to be breathing slightly heavier than her brother at times. She still chirps and acts normal. I read it could be a respiratory issue. Both lovebirds are very slightly moving their tails as they breathe. Is this normal?

Some tail movement can be normal because birds have to expand their entire chest to breathe in and out, so that could be what you're seeing. If Tangerine is otherwise healthy, just keeping an eye on her is best. However, if she seems to be having a hard time breathing, has any discharge from the nose or mouth, or becomes listless and refuses to eat or drink, this can mean illness which should be checked out by your vet.
