My new mom cat bites me! Why is she aggressive and how to stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | 1 year and 2 months old | 11 lbs

Hi. My husband and I brought in a very friendly pregnant stray cat. We already have 3 cats. One is kept in the spare bedroom. Our master bedroom is large so we put her up in our room. She gave birth 4 weeks ago. She has been aggressive towards me and even bit me from behind on my calf. Drew blood. It was unprovoked. She doesn't show signs of aggression towards my husband only me. And he's the one always touching the kittens. Why is she acting this way and how can I deal with her?

I'm sorry to hear that you're having this problem with Winnie! Some mother cats do become aggressive when they have young kittens nearby, and it's not uncommon for aggression to be directed towards some people and not others. I would recommend finding another place for her in the house where you will not need to be around her until the kittens are older, if possible. If you aren't able to do this, you may be able to help this problem by tossing treats on the floor for her to keep her busy when you need to walk through the room - this should help her to associate good things with your presence, and will give her something else to keep her occupied when you are passing by.
