Why is my cat with kidney disease meowing constantly? Is he in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

My cat is four years old and has kidney problems for about 1 and a half years. He had a urinary blockage once and now only licks his penis all the time even though he pees fine. He eats renal health food. My problem is he meows constantly and loudly even when being petted. He runs away after a few seconds of petting and hides. The howling is my biggest issue because hes unrestrained and wont calm down. Is he in pain or is this a side effect of renal failure?

I recommend a urine screen to determine his urinary tract health and any cause for pain or discomfort in this area. Kidneys are only rarely damaged by urinary obstruction but if there is evidence of issues, a blood test may be required also. Wet food, calming supplements and pain relief may be recommended depending on the results
