Is a cat whose kittens died from FIP safe to bring home to other cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 1 year old | 8 lbs

I'm thinking of adopting a mother cat whose kittens all died with FIP. She has never shown any signs of being sick herself. Is it safe to bring her into my household with my other cats?

FIP is not an infectious disease. While it is associated with corona virus infection there is an immune system response component that causes true FIP. There are other diseases though that should be considered before introducing your cats. This includes FIV, FELV as well as feline herpes. Your veterinarian could screen this cat before you introduce her to your house hold.
