My cat has facial swelling and her eyes twitch when sleeping. Seizure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 1 month old

My cat has facial swelling on the (right) side of her face which is deforming her lip, cheek, nose and eye. I noticed three days ago and took her to the vet yesterday: she's in pain and the lip is the source. She's on antibiotics now but I noticed something strange last night before going to the vet: As she relaxes or begins to fall asleep her second eyelids close half way, her pupils change size, the eyes twitch side to side and she stares off into space and twitches. Epilepsy/ Seizure?

It's possible. If she's falling asleep with her eyes half open you may also be seeing the normal REM eye movement where the eyes will jut back and forth together in rapid succession. If the swelling isn't going down with the antibiotics, or you are seeing an uptick in other symptoms including possible seizures, it would be best to bring Shanti back ASAP. It may be the infection is worsening or spreading, or there is another underlying issue/med reaction that needs to be addressed ASAP by your vet.
