Chihuahua breathing fast after carpet powder. Heart murmur or allergy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 12 years old | 7 lbs

Hi--Used a carpet powder yesterday, let sit on carpet about 20 min then vacuumed up. Chihuaua has had some breathing issues since then, I'm guessing a reaction :(. He has a heart murmur though so worried the rapid breathing might be that? Gave 1/4 Benadryl at 8:30 am and that slowed it, just gave him another 1/4. If Benadryl helped is it most likely a reaction?

While it could be an allergic reaction Benadryl can also cause sedation. With Koda's breed, age and heart murmur history it would be safest to have your veterinarian do an exam to make sure he isn't going into congestive heart failure. If that is not an option continue to monitor he breathing rate and effort and I do not recommend giving any more Benadryl as that could be artificially lowering his breathing rate through its sedative effects
