My dog is lethargic and won't eat his favorite treat. Is he sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 27 days old | 80 lbs

My dog seemed a bit lethargic on our walk this morning, and when we got home I gave him a raw hide (which is usually loves and chews down to nothing within an hour) but so far he's laid here for an hour and hasn't touched it. He ate breakfast this morning and seemed fine, but I'm getting worried now.

I'm sorry Moose doesn't seem well! Lethargy is a very general sign of illness in dogs, and can be caused by many things including systemic illness, inflammation, infection, or injury. Given that he has eaten this morning and the symptoms just started, I would keep an eye on him for the next 48-72 hours. Should the lethargy continue over this time period, or he develops other signs such as anorexia, vomiting, and/or diarrhea, I would take Moose into the vet for a health check.
