How to properly welcome a new puppy home without overwhelming them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 28 days old | 10 lbs

I still am waiting to receive my puppy red nosed pitbull Kiro but I was just wondering how I should treat him upon arrival. I will without a doubt show a lot of affection towards Kiro but should there be certain emotions I should avoid with him? Also how much space should i give Kiro when he arrives. He will be 8-10 weeks old once he is with me. Will showing too much affection to Kiro scare him ?

Hi I'm glad you're getting prepared to start your life with Kiro. It's good to remember that dog behavior is very different to human behavior. Dogs usually don't like being hugged and kissed as they don't do this naturally. Also being very loud and making big gestures with your hands can be scary. I have a very good book recommendation: "Decoding your dog " its available from Amazon and will help you show love to Kiro without overwhelming him. It also discusses how to train him. Good luck!
