My German Shepherd has green mucus, bloody nose. Can I use Benadryl?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 9 months old

I, quite some time ago, asked what I should do for my German Shepherd, Kane. He still has a constant flow of mucus, very slightly green and from time to time he either sneezes or blows his nose. This produces several small to large(2 inches long) masses of blood and mucus. I can't afford a Vet but when I take him out he is lively, ears up, great spirits. What can I use to dry his nasal passage like non drowsey Benydryl & what strength? Thank you, Mickey Michael D Beskin

It sounds like he has an active infection that is draining so you don't want to use any over the counter products that are designed to stop that drainage, this will undoubtedly make him much sicker. You want to find out the cause of his rhinitis (inflamed nasal passage) and upper respiratory infection. Unfortunately this isn't cut an dry and at the very least requires an exam through your veterinarian. You won't be able to help Kane with at home remedies or over the counter products. I would first start with a short course antibiotic though the vet to see if this clears things up. If this doesn't work, then a bacterial culture can be done to see what antibiotic this infection is sensitive to, to make sure we are on the right track. Also a skull radiograph can be considered to look for underlying masses (considering his age), growths or any abnormalities in the nasal passage itself. Here are some financial resources, if needed. I hope you find some answers soon and I hope that Kane makes a full and speedy recovery. Best of luck. Carecredit.com Redrover.org
