My dog refuses fatty acid pills. Can I apply the oil to his skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 170 lbs

My dog won't take his fatty acids oil pill either by putting the oil on his food or by putting the whole pill into another type of food. He always sniffs it out and then won't touch that food at all afterwards. Can I apply the oil to his skin and get as good of results or will it not absorb as well? I'm getting desperate because he needs this pill and we're running out of options!

Trying a different brand may help, or placing the pill in a high value food such as cheese which is more likely to be gulped down without sniffing out the pill first. You may also have to give the pill manually. You can put oils such as vitamin E directly on the skin, however if you are using it for systemic benefits in addition to skin ones, it should be given orally.
