Dog recovering from parvo: Is dark, thick stool normal after parvo?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 7 lbs

Scooter I believe had parvo but she's getting better. She hasn't vomited or pooped in 3 days. Seems more alert and is walking around more. I'm still giving her pedialyte every 45 mins or less and she's keeping it down. But during the course of treating her, she had one bloody diarreah and that was the 1st day. This is the 5th day and no vomit or poop at all for 4 days. But when I check her temp rectal, there is thick dark stool on the thermometer. Is this bc she had parvo and is getting better?

Poor Scooter. I am so glad that she is doing better. All the signs you describe seems like she is improving. The tarry black stool looks like either digested blood or it could be a side effect of pepto if you gave her any of that. If she is eating and drinking and starting to become more active then I think she is on the mends! With her being so small, you could continue the pedialyte for a few more days until you are confident that she is feeling 100% better.
