My large dog is limping, won't put weight on his swollen leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 100 lbs

I have a 7 yr old 100+ lb pitbull, has history of bad hips and knees. About 2 weeks ago he must have turned wrong bc there wasn't any running or activity like that. He's been limping, doesn't put weight on it and it's swollen. He gets mad when we touch or massage it, obviously it hurts him. Taking him to the vet will cause him to hurt it worse with the car ride and being scared of the doctor. Anti inflammatory? Wrap? Help please

Do not give any medications to your dog without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic to pets. Ideally, Ziggy should be examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary orthopedic specialist to diagnose ligament damage, arthritic conditions, fractures or tumors. X-rays of the knees and hips will likely be recommended. These can be done under anesthesia or sedation. A veterinary house all service may be an option for an exam. Afterwards, a sedative and/or pain management can be dispensed to make the trip to the clinic easier and less stressful for all parties.
