New cat vomiting, hiding, and not eating well after moving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

My family and I just moved to a new home and adopted 2 10 year old female cats from a lady about 2 weeks ago. One of the cats (Jade) has been getting pretty comfortable with her new family and home but the other one (Cinder) hasn't, she comes up to me sometimes but then always hears a noise and runs to hide. She is not eating the hard food properly and I think when we have given her soft food she is eating it to fast. she has been vomiting all the time. What should I do? Im worried about her.

Consider having Cinder examined by your veterinarian to diagnose medical causes for the vomiting. Vomiting is a very non specific symptom having multiple causes. It may also be due to the stress of a new environment. Pheromone products such as Feliway spray or plug in diffuser may decrease any anxiety. You can feed smaller amounts of food more frequently to see if that helps decrease vomiting episodes. A 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet in small, frequent amounts may also be used to manage symptoms. Your veterinarian can dispense anti-emetics if indicated.

It sounds like Tuna might be having anxiety about the new cat. The vomiting might be from stress and anxiety, but we have to ask is it only behavior, or is there a medical reason. A trip to your veterinarian for an exam and possible lab work would help to make sure there are no other concerns. If it is determined to be a behavior problem, I would start with a pheromone such as Feliway that can help with anxiety. It is available as a plug-in room diffuser for large areas, and as a spray for small areas like a mat or bed. https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=8906 https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=37241 Another product I like is Composure, which is available as a little treat. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetri-science-composure-feline-bite-sized-chews If these do not help, you might consider discussing prescription medication for anxiety with your veterinarian. Lastly, here is a link to an article about the best way to introduce a new cat to the home. You might need to back up a bit and try this. https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-steps-to-introducing-your-cat-to-a-new-feline/ Thanks for using PetCoach.
