Why does my dog have soft, runny poop, bad gas, and eat grass?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 8 lbs

I have a jack-rat terrier 15 months old, and yesterday I noticed his stools were soft almost runny and a terrible odor when he passes gas. He's not had new food, and is up to date with vet for maintenance. I can tell he doesn't feel well and he is eating grass here and there. What can this be?

He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 12 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food.If the symptoms carry on, take him to the vet to get treatment.

It could be a gastrointestinal infection. withhold food for 12 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If the diarrhea continues, take him to the vet to get treatment.
