My dog had a seizure and is acting strange. Should I go to ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 12 years and 7 months old

My dog just had a seizure. She's been acting weird for a few days. Staring at walls. Panting heavily. Walking in circles. Sleeping for about 10 min then waking up and panting and doing this repeatedly. Bloodwork did show liver enzymes elevated. Do kidney issues show up in bloodwork, because the emergency vet didn't even mention her kidneys? Anyways, I'm very scared and don't know if I should take her to emergency vet or wait for vet visit tomorrow morning. Taking her to neurologist tuesday

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that Sierra is not feeling well. Yes, the kidney enzymes are run with the regular blood work routinely. If the vet didn't mention them then they were likely within the normal range. My best advise is that if you are worried or scared you should take her into the vet tonight. Maybe they could start her on some medication to calm her down until her appointment with the neurologist on Tuesday. You know your dog best and if that would give you some piece of mind then you should do that. All the activity you are describing is abnormal and I am worried she may go into a cluster of seizures where she is going to have multiple seizures one after another. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Sierra. Dr. Amber
