How to care for a stray dog with matted fur and fleas affordably?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | 5 lbs

I found a little dog (maybe pomeranian?) about a week ago and he has pretty matted fur and TERRIBLE fleas. What can I do for him without paying a big vet bill?

Poor Nero! If he was found, he really does need to see a vet as soon as possible. He could have additional problems to his matted fur and fleas, such as an illness or injury, and her really does need veterinary treatment. As for the fur, the vet can shave him or you can have him seen by a groomer. I can also give you the flea treatment program I always recommend. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Please have Nero seen by a vet first thing Monday.
