My dog's sticky, smelly skin isn't better after antibiotics. Steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 8 years and 2 months old | 23 lbs

My vet gave my dachshund kflex for a skin bacteria condition she is not getting any better. The skin around her legs is sticky and crusty and she is scratching and it stinks. I want something I can do to help her. Vet wants to give her a steroid shot but how will that help if the pills didn't work.

I'm sorry Dixie had a skin infection. Skin conditions can be frustrating for pets, owners and vets. The keflex is an antibiotic to treat infection. Many times skin infections are secondary to an allergic reaction so the steroid would be to help the itchiness. Many times skin disease requires a multi-modal approach- meaning you may have to treat for bacterial and or fungal infection as well as itchiness all while trying to find the cause. Sometimes medicated shampoos can help give relief quicker, ask your vet which shampoo you can use to give Dixie a bit more relief. Good luck, hope she feels better soon.
