Dog sick after ticks, now recovering. Should I still go to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 25 lbs

Yesterday my dog was with lethargic, breathing shallow, not eating. She did not urinate or poop all day. It seemed hard for her to stand or move. We found 3 ticks on her and removed them yesterday. This morning(6am) I got her to eat and drink, she urinated, and she is moving more (lifting her head, cleaning herself, standing to pee, etc.) I was going to take her into a vet today but she seems to be recovering. Is the vet trip necessary? (PS, I live in rural SouthernAfrica so vettripsarenot easy)

If your dog is acting normally now, I do not think a trip to the vet is necessary. Keep a close eye on Koro for any regression or backtracking. In regards to ticks, I would make sure that she has some sort of preventative, be it an oral medication, topical, or collar to address fleas and ticks. The ticks that may have bitten Koro could potentially cause disease down the line. Many of these illnesses they carry have very long incubation periods, sometimes many, many months, prior to clinical signs being obvious. Hope this helps.
