How do I stop my dog from jumping over the fence and escaping?

Kali looks just like my dog, who is also an escape artist. You have a few options - taller fences, electric fences , or fence with electric collar. Or use a wire long leash (tether) in the yard so she can move about but not escape the perimeter. Make sure she's not left in the yard on her own for long periods as boredom is a common reason for dogs to escape.

Hi there. Since she is getting out, and there a lot dangers out there, I highly recommend she be placed back in side. This is safer for her all around. There really isn't another alternative other then a crate inside.

One option that can work for dogs who like to escape are under ground electric fences. You can purchase one and install it yourself and go through the training or the companies offer an instillation and training service. The dog needs to wear a special collar that detects the fence and will administer a correction if the dog gets too close. Most dogs will respect this system although some dogs will not. I recommend to do some research about these systems and see if they area good match for you. It is very difficult to train a dog not to escape and I don’t know many people who are successful at that. Otherwise never leave Miley unsupervised in the yard as this will elimate her ability to get out. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hello, potty to hear about your pup. Theres likely no specific reason as to why she is wanting to be outside. She is likely leaving out of curiosity and stimulation, not necessarily to mate, but also due to different smells and other animals. Your dog likely enjoys her time outside her house and wants to continue to explore, this could be hazardous to her of course so your concern is understandable. There are multiple products to prevent this behaviors such as a shock fence, however these may also cause some pain and discomfort. You can try to fulfill her curiosity with longer more frequent walks then at home keep the doors close so that she does not leave. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I am sorry to hear about your dog! I would definitely consider getting him neutered, as being an intact male he is much more likely to try to escape the yard as he has a hormonal urge to do so. I would also consider getting an electric fencing system in addition to your normal fence to act as an extra deterrent for escape.

This is a very frustrating behavior to have to deal with. Sometimes invisible fence works. Other times a tie-down or run system is effective. Another solution is do you have a trainer work with you and your dogs in your home to address this issue. Punishment is a tricky method as it has to be done immediately after the behavior in order to be effective as well as it could backfire and cause aggression.

I have a lab mix (about 2 years old) and I live on a dead-end street on 4 acres. I want her to stay in the yard, but sometimes she visits neighbors for hours at a time and there are a couple of dogs that come through and she will roam with them. I
I think an underground fence or an electric fence that has a home base (see link below) might be the best solution. Petsafe is a good company who makes these products. It shouldn’t scare her further away but it should keep her inside the boundaries. I would keep the level on low to keep her from becoming scared to go in the yard. This is the safest thing to prevent her from getting out and either getting lost or injured. There is also a GPS tracking device for the collar called whistle that you can use to keep up with her if she still gets out. Scooby recently learned he can jump over my fence and although I’ve built barriers he still had managed to either get out or at least keeps trying. Is there any way to stop this bad habit of his? Anyway to make him forget he can jump it?
I highly recommend walking Scooby on a leash to go outside. I would also make sure that Scooby is microchipped. There isn't much you can do to stop him besides this from jumping over the fence. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

I would recommend only letting her in the back yard when you can supervise her and stop the behaviors. Some people use an extended leash to prevent dogs from getting out HOWEVER that carries some very serious risks such as strangulation if she gets wrapped around something or jumps over a fence, so I don't like that idea. It may also be worthwhile to work with a good trainer or even veterinary behaviorist to find some alternative behaviors to teach her.

It sounds like Keg is chewing on the fence so that he can escape - many dogs do this as a result of boredom when they are left alone outside for long periods. Barking at people on the other side of the fence is also a very common behavior problem in dogs - it's very frustrating for him to be able to hear people walking past without being able to interact, so he barks and growls out of frustration. Over time, this behavior often gets worse and can evolve into aggression towards people outside the fence, so it's definitely cause for concern. All of these problems stem from Keg being outside on his own too much - dogs are very social animals, so they become quite frustrated and neurotic when they are outside alone all day. The only way to stop these behaviors is to stop leaving him alone outside - either bring him into the house, or go outside with him and keep him busy playing or hanging out near you.
