How can I potty train my Shih Tzu to stop pooping all over the house?

What are some effective potty training techniques for my Shih Tzu? Usually he smells for his scent before he poops, but lately he has been pooping all over the house. I use wee wee pads and walk him, but he just uses the bathroom whenever he wants. I am very frustrated because when I come home I have to scavenger hunt for where he used the bathroom. Any suggestions? Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 5 months and 2 days old | 5.2 lbs

Hi there. Potty training is very difficult. The key is crate training so he doesn't have full run of the house and so he learns to hold it. It has to be small enough to only allow him to stand, turn, and lay down. If it's too big, the go potty in it, then move away from it.
