My dog has a cut. How to heal, prevent infection, and allow swimming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 55 lbs

My doodle had a huge matte underneath her ear, almost like one big dread. As I was cutting it out, I got a little to close to her skin and cut off a flap of her skin. I have applied Neosporin and a bandaid over the wound. Is there anything else I should do in order to prevent infection and help it heal faster? The wound was never gushing blood, however there was a tiny bit of blood visible as the surface. Also we are going to a lake in about 5 days, will it be safe for her to go in the water?

Depending on how large the wound is, it may heal faster if sutured closed. If not deep, keep her from scratching and keep it clean. I would not recommend she go swimming if the wound is still open as they may lead to infection. But if relatively healed she should be fine. If need to clean use only gently soap and water. Daily applications of peroxide will actually inhibit healing.
