My 4-month-old spayed puppy is itchy. How can I soothe her discomfort?

Good afternoon I have a 4 month old dog who has just gotten spayed and her mother has dermatitis she's also allergic to fleas how would treat and help her daughter with the itching and discomfort?

Sometimes an oatmeal based shampoo helps with itching (do not bathe your puppy until at least 10-25 days after her surgery). For flea control there are both OTC and prescription options as well as topical and oral. Depending on his frequently they are bathed, tolerance of topical application and other factors your veterinarian could recommend which product(s) work best for your situation. If you need something now most pet supply stores have products like Frontline or Advantage topical a which work well. It is important their environment is treated as well to prevent fleas. Also if either dog has a skin infection from scratching (which happens often in these cases) your veterinarian will often prescribe antibiotics for their skin.

    I recommend a mild hypoallergenic shampoo. That should soothe and cleanse the skin and not reduce the effectiveness of the flea topical. Poor Lucky! Flea bites can be very irritating to the skin. If she received an oral flea medication today at the vet's office, you can try bathing her in an aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo to help soothe the irritation and make her feel better. If her flea medication was topical (applied to the skin), then unfortunately she can't be bathed for a few days without washing off the medication. In that case, I would suggest asking your veterinarian about an over-the-counter medication like Benadryl - this can be used in dogs to hep with itching and skin irritation in some cases, but should only be given if directed by your puppy's vet.

Relief for dog post surgery shaving itch
Typically I recommend an anti-histamine like Benadryl or a pet formulate NSAID (such as Rimadyl(Carprofen) or Meloxicam) to help with potential pain at the incision site. It isn't advised to place anything directly on the incision as this can seep through the incision lining and cause infection. I would also recommend keeping an e-collar (cone) on your pet to prevent licking and scratching at the area that can lead to opening of the incision and infection as well. If there are obvious bumps or open lesions on the skin then this should also be treated with an antibiotic (oral) prescribed by your vet.

My puppy itches a lot. She also used her teeth to itch/bite I can’t see any fleas on her and she was delfead 2 weeks ago. She cries when she does this. The vet said she hasn’t got fleas and I can’t see any
Itchy skin can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. As you mentioned Thea is biting at her skin and crying, it sounds like she is uncomfortable, and she needs to be seen by a veterinarian. I recommend making an appointment to have Thea seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the itching and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can use a hypoallergenic, unscented shampoo for dogs to bathe her, and put an e-collar (cone) on her to help prevent her from biting/licking at her skin, as this may help reduce the risk of infection, although it is unlikely to resolve the current problem.

Is it normal that she scratches and licks/bite her legs and tummy due to itchyness? It looks like impetigo. Can it cure by shampoo? Can a almost 2month old take a bath already? And how long she can stay in water while taking bath? Thank you
Impetigo or puppy pyoderma is not usually very itchy, there could be an underlying cause of the itch and Riri may benefit from a checkup with the vet if it isn't getting better in a few days. If it is only impetigo, it should go away on its own without any treatment as it is not caused by bacteria, only changing hormones as she ages. Yes, she is old enough for a bath. You can use a medicated shampoo for itch from the pet store, lather it into her skin and leave for 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

What can I apply to my dog’s skin that is dry/itchy? We were battling fleas recently, and I think his skin has gotten super dry from flea shampoos.. Please advise. Thank you.
You can try aloe or a soothing lotion made for dogs. Fatty acid supplements are also helpful but may take 1 month to see results. Flea shampoos are inadequate for flea protection and prevention since it only removes fleas that live on the dog. For every flea on the dog there are 9 more in the house/environment! Oral or topical preventatives are necessary when battling fleas.

I have a nursing mother dog i rescued she is a small 4lb maltese with 3 little 4 week old babies...she seems to have an itching problem..no fleas that i see...is there anything i can use to help her get some relief...i know with her having nursing ba
Itchiness can be caused by various reasons such as fleas, mites ,fungal infection, bacterial infection and allergies. the first 4 needs to be ruled out before we start treating for allergies. in order to do that first de-flea her with a high quality flea treatment such as Frontline spray (safe for nursing dogs as well as puppies), if it doesn't help - take her to the vet in order to check for/treat the other possibilities. If everything is ruled out, then an allergy treatment can be started. Usually an hypoallergenic food is a good way to start together with anti histamines. if it doesn't help - the best solution is a medication called Apoquel which treats allergies with great success and without side effects.

My wife brought home a stray Lab male pup recently. We noticed that he had a few fleas but have treated him and have not seen anymore since. My wife gave him his first bath about a week ago. Shortly thereafter we noticed that he seemed to be itching
Itchy skin is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-tell-if-your-pet-has-allergies/ 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. It's good to check him for fleas again and get treatment if needed. Below is a link to a good article about fleas. https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-tips-to-get-rid-of-fleas 3) Over-bathing, or using the wrong product for bathing - Bathing too often can cause the skin to get dry and irritated. Dogs should normally be bathed no more than once a month with a shampoo that is labeled for dogs. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store.

My dog Sasha has been itching nonstop and biting on herself I thought it was flees because I seen a couple but I gave her a flees bath she continues to scatch alot and bite on herself still I want to know what it is and what I should do for her thank
It looks like she has a flea allergy dermatitis and is in need of prescription medications. You need to schedule an appointment with your vet for treatment. She likely needs an antibiotic, corticosteroid, and flea prevention to treat her skin infection and help control the flea problem. A flea bath is not going to be enough. She needs a flea prevention like Nexgard, Credelio, Bravecto, etc and your vet can prescribe one.

My dog won’t stop itching. She did it some, and then ended up accidentally being exposed to a lot of fleas. I got her treated, there are zero fleas now but her itching has gone into double time. She is currently on antibiotics for an upper respirator
Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). This all depends on the severity and cause. If it’s very mild allergies, a shampoo like Duoxo Calm can help strengthen the skin barrier and decrease itching. (Bathe once to twice weekly during flare ups and try to leave the lather on for 5 minutes if possible.) If there is already a skin infection, hot spot, or it’s a hypersensitivity or flea/tick problem, you’ll need to visit your vet to get the proper treatment.
