Is Aloe Vera gel safe for my dog's skin? What are the risks?

The gel from an aloe plant is ok to use topically. The white sap. or latex, from a broken leaf is toxic and may cause gastrointestinal upset. It is always prudent to check with your veterinarian before applying anything on your pet. If you choose to use the gel, make sure Tuffy cannot lick the area.

It seems like she had a very small amount, so it's likely that she won't have any problems, but she may vomit or have loose stools in the next 24 hours. There could also be vomiting secondary to a gastrointestinal obstruction. Because there is already vomiting present, I would recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for an obstruction and prescribe anti-nausea medications. In the meantime, feed Ellie a bland diet mostly composed of chicken breast and white rice. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! There are parts of the Aloe Vera plant that is toxic to animals. If the shampoo is made for dogs and cats it should be fine for puppies. If you are unsure then use an oatmeal based shampoo or just use Dawn dish soap. I hope this helps!

If there are no other toxicities, you can try withholding food for 12 hours, then offering small frequent meals of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for several days. Some calamine lotions have zinc as an ingredient, which could be toxic if licked off. If your lotion contains zinc, I would not recommend using this lotion. You can contact your vet for a prescription spray or ointment that can be used safely on the skin, instead. Aloe gel is another option that may soothe minor irritation and is safe if ingested (if it is only aloe).

I would just monitor for gastrointestinal upset. Usually these are not toxic but can cause soft stool. In rabbits soft stool can be considered an emergency. Rabbits eat a part of their feces to help them digest food. If Alpha develops diarrhea I recommend taking him to a vet for an exam.
