My dog's penis came out and was bloody after vaccine. Emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

I have a male mutt, 20 pounds, that received the Lepto vaccine, first shot yesterday. 20 minutes ago, he was limping because his penis and testicles were fully extended and exposed outside the sheath, and the end of the penis was bloody, although I couldn't see any puddles of blood anywhere. Is this a medical emergency. The penis has gone back inside its sheath.

No, this is not an emergency, and is extremely doubtful to have anything to do with the administration of the lepto vaccine. If you continue to see penile extrusion on a more than regular basis, particularly with red discharge, I would have him looked at just to make sure that everything is OK. Penile discharge in small amounts is somewhat acceptable, though more common in intact male dogs. Give it another half day to a day before running out to the doctor for a work up. Hope this helps.
