Why is my cat lethargic, bald, with black specs after flea meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

I know my cat has fleas. I've already spoken with a dmv on this website and they recommended a treatment. We've given her the medicine and we followed the instructions exactly. The fleas are almost gone. We have cleaned everything with a flea killer called sentry home guard. Today I noticed a few bald spots on my cat and black specs around her mouth. She's also very lethargic although her appetite seems normal. Is this from the medicine or the fleas? We used advantage ii.

Those black spots could be flea dirt or areas of yeast as well. The bald spots could be from skin irritation, self trauma from itching or even another infection called ringworm. The lethargy is concerning as usually Advantage does not cause that change. However fleas can cause anemia even in adult cats as well as transmit bacterial infections that can make a cat very sick. If Mama remains lethargic she needs to get checked out by a veterinarian, sooner if her gums are pale or discolored.
