My dog has a red, peeling ear bump. When should I worry and see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 64 lbs

My dog has a large-ish bump on the outside of his left ear. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, he hasn't been scratching at it. It's a dark red color and looks as if the skin is peeling off the bump. The hair has become very thin on the bump and it's a bit hard to the touch. He has had ticks on his ears but they've been pulled off along with the head. He has two other, much smaller bumps on his ears. I'm just a little worried and was wondering if he should be taken to the vet.

Yes, I would recommend Houdini is checked by a vet as soon as possible; many tumors can develop on the ears and early diagnosis maximises the chance of a complete cure. Biopsy or removal and submission to the lab for accurate diagnosis is recommended in any growing or hairless mass, especially with the color change you describe.
