My dog's scaly skin piles up; antibiotics didn't help. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever | Male | unneutered | 47 lbs

What kind of thing would cause a scaling on skin that piles on top of each other? Did have a bacterial infection but 2 months of antibiotics and topical shampoo has not eliminated it. Help!

This could be due to a fungal infection, resistant bacterial infection, zinc responsive dermatitis, an autoimmune disease, seborrhetic dermatitis or even allergies. Sometimes a shampoo that is meant for doggy dandruff (seborrhea) is helpful as well as omega 3 fatty acids. Depending on the cause an antifungal may be needed as well as sometimes steroids. Some of these possible causes require a biopsy to diagnose, others a fungal culture and others are based on eliminating every other cause. I recommend discussing these potential causes with your veterinarian in order to get Ari's skin better managed.
