What's best for my old cat: Long travel or finding a new home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 13 years and 11 months old

Family is moving to another country & won’t take 14 year-old cat. I am visiting them & want to take cat to the US with me. Trip is 2 flights, 1 layover, 5hour bus ride. Cat is old, never travelled & hates car rides. Cat is outdoor/indoor-where I live I can’t let her outside. Parents want to get outdoor cat house outside their old home & have a friend feed her. Cat would be living alone on property. No one will take her. 2-day life-threatening journey or leave cat alone where she is comfortable?

I would not recommend such a journey in an older cat especially if her routine will be changed from a free ranging cat to an indoor cat as this would provide an ongoing environmental stress even after the journey. Contact local humane societies and shelters to see if they can help provide a foster home for her or inquire of your neighbours if anyone is willing to monitor her and take responsibility for her ongoing care and health needs as she gets older.
