Why won't my puppy eat? Is it boredom, heat, or feeding time?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 5 months and 25 days old | 31 lbs

My 6 month old female Bernese Mountain Dog/mix Border Collie, doesn't seem interested in her food. I've checked her stool for worms, and don't see a trace of any. She's not refusing treats or water. Do you think she's bored with her puppy food? (She gets 2 1/2 cups daily total). Should I just leave her dish down, or pick it up-after a certain amount of time? It's hot here in Ontario, and last nite she ate her food completely -after sundown.

Increases in the environmental temperature can cause dogs to not want to eat. You can try leaving her food out longer, feeding her earlier in the day when it's cooler or feeding her indoors where it could be air-conditioned. With this breed they can be predisposed to certain stomach conditions if only fed once a day. Therefore I would try to get her to eat two meals again if possible.
