My cat has FIP. Separate him from other pets? What's his life expectancy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 8.2 lbs

Testing came back that my cat has FIP and he is very skinny and seems off. He is almost 6 years old. His eyes water and get gunk since he was a kitten and lately he sits very straight. We got him and his sister from a cat rescue at 5 months old and he always had eye issues and things but didn't think much of it. At this point, should we separate him from his sister who seems healthy and is our only other cat? They have always been together. Also what may I expect for his life expectancy?

Unfortunately FIP has a grave prognosis. Some cats only survive a few days to weeks after their diagnoses, others a couple of months. It is not contagious so you shouldn't have to separate the two cats in less the healthy cat is preventing Parker from getting to food/water/litter box. In fact separating them could cause other issues such as urinating outside the litter box, excessive vocalization and aggression toward each other if they are re-introduced.
