Why does my dog hack and gag after exercise? What are home remedies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 6 months old | 11.2 lbs

I have a video of my dog doing this weird hacking sound and kinda sounds like there is something in her throat and at the end it sounds like shes throwing up. Usually it happens when shes running and being active I notice. It has been happening for a while now and I was hoping it would go away with time but it has not, I cant afford a vet visit and Im hoping there is home remedies. Shes an 11 year old Yorkie/Maltese/Poodle mix. Shes pretty huper and still acts like a puppy though.

Hi from Deenah's breed and age, a tracheal collapse episode sounds likely especially that it occurs when exercising. Make sure you use a chest harness instead of attaching leash to collar. Some veterinary medicines can help the cough. Another possibility is reverse sneezing - this is harmless but can be quite striking, if you look on you tube for videos of this, you can see if it looks like whatDeenah is doing.
