My senior cat has kidney disease & constipation. What should she eat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Van | Female | spayed | 10 years and 11 months old | 6.5 lbs

Sr. cat with stage 2 renal failure. She struggles with constipation, inadequate water drinking, arthritis, toothless, cataracts, and deafnesss. She is on Royal Canin kidney recipe as the most tolerable of choices to-date (really didn't care for Hill Science version). Have been mixing with fancy feast kitty or adult pate, laxative and Cosequin. Recently found Delectables bisques to add instead of fancy feast. She seems to like well & I can add water, upping her intake. Ash content concern.

I am so to hear Molly is going through so much. It sounds like you are doing a really great job with her. I definitely agree that she needs the canned food to help increase her water intake which may be also why she doesn't drink as much. Of course it would be best if she would eat a canned kidney diet, but I would rather her eating something rather than nothing at all. Also, I would continue the laxative but you may want to try to add in some canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling) which may help to add some fiber to her diet. Finally if she doesn't want the pumpkin, you could try to sprinke 1/2 teaspoon of plain metamucil (in the fiber section of the grocery) to her canned food and see if that will help with her constipation. I hope she starts to feel better.
