My senior dog has heart failure, coughing, and won't eat. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed

If my dog is 14 and has heart failure and has a severe cough that appears to be causing her discomfort what should I do? She is still eating but not as much as she used to. She sleeps most of the day and doesn't seem to enjoy her walks anymore.

Hi. Is your pet on medications for heart failure? If so, and still coughing, your veterinarian may need to reassess xrays and possibly increase doses of medication. Prognosis for heart failure is guarded to poor. I'm sorry she isn't feeling well

I'm sorry Cuclo isn't doing well. Unfortunately heart disease cannot be cured, it can only be managed by medication. The medication can help with his symptoms, but heart disease is eventually fatal.
